Alongside celebrating three years of sobriety, I recently marked my 42nd birthday—two absolute miracles, considering how close I once was to losing my life to drug and alcohol addiction. Just three years ago, I was suicidal, overweight, bedridden, and in constant pain from opioid withdrawal. My days were spent alone, in the dark, struggling to feed my addiction and avoid withdrawal symptoms. I had given up hope of ever living a healthy, sober lifestyle.
That’s why traveling to Southern California this past month to do a photo shoot with legendary fitness photographer Michael Neveux felt like a dream come true. For this 42-year-old recovering addict, it was proof that what once seemed impossible had become reality.
Dream Come True at 42
When I saw the photos, I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. It’s amazing how a talented photographer, excellent lighting, a dark tan, and a bit of baby oil can make a physique pop! Arnold Schwarzenegger once said it best about the hard work required to build a body you’re proud of:
“A well-built physique is a status symbol. It reflects you worked hard for it, no money can buy it. You cannot borrow it, you cannot inherit it, you cannot steal it. You cannot hold onto it without constant work. It shows discipline, it shows self-respect, it shows patience, work ethic and passion. That is why I do what I do.”- Arnold Schwarzenegger
Fitness: A Cornerstone of Recovery
As a sober fitness coach, I’ve made it my mission to help addicts understand why fitness is essential to recovery. While there are many factors that accelerate recovery—such as building a strong support system, maintaining proper nutrition, and engaging in volunteer work—fitness always tops my list for anyone seeking a complete transformation of the mind, body, and spirit.
6 Reasons Why Fitness Supports Sobriety
1. Support
As Johann Hari famously shared in his TED Talk, “The opposite of addiction is connection.” The gym can be an excellent place to connect with others pursuing a healthy and active lifestyle. I’ve met countless individuals at gyms across the country who agree that fitness is a key component of their recovery. If you need extra support or motivation, consider hiring a personal trainer—bonus points if they’re also in recovery.
2. Environment
Gyms provide an environment that feels grand and inspiring, with high ceilings, plenty of light, upbeat music, and energetic classes. For an addict seeking a positive atmosphere, the gym can be a sanctuary filled with movement and motivation.
3. Discipline
Escaping addiction often requires developing self-discipline, and fitness is one of the best ways to build it. Commit to a workout regimen and stick to it, no matter what. Even when you don’t feel like exercising, show up and get it done. Fitness teaches discipline, which is a skill that carries over into all areas of life.
4. Routine
Establishing a daily workout routine can help an addict stay focused, organized, and active. During early recovery, creating structure can feel challenging, so it’s important to start with a realistic schedule. Treat exercise as a daily priority, just like brushing your teeth. With clear goals and the right mindset, fitness can become an integral part of your life.
5. Physique
Imagine looking in the mirror and thinking, “Wow, I look amazing!” Regular exercise and a healthy diet will lead to a physique you can feel proud of. And let’s be honest—no one regrets having a six-pack. Once you’ve committed to sobriety, you’ll find you have more free time than ever before, time that can be dedicated to achieving your fitness goals.
6. Self-Confidence
Addiction often leaves us with a negative perception of ourselves. Fortunately, regular exercise has been shown to boost self-esteem. When you work out consistently, not only will you look and feel better physically, but your mental well-being will improve, too. Fitness is an invaluable tool for rebuilding self-confidence in recovery.
Gratitude for the Journey
Fitness has played an enormous role in my recovery journey. I’ll always be grateful to the mentors, trainers, and coaches who taught me the importance of fitness, nutrition, and creating a positive routine. My hope is to inspire other recovering addicts to take the first step toward a healthier lifestyle. It doesn’t matter where you’re starting from, how old you are, or what shape you’re in—what matters is that you take action.
